8C English is a new addition to the curriculum. The course is designed to challenge and enrich English students at the eighth grade level. In addition to the units listed above, 8C students will also study:

Throughout each unit of study, students will focus on: grammar; mechanics;literary elements; vocabulary; parts of speech; strategies to improve writing.

An eighth grade National History Day research project is integrated with Social Studies. This research project allows students to choose a topic in history related to this year’s theme, which is “Triumph and Tragedy in History.”

All eighth grade students are encouraged, and at times required, to select books to read independently.

Our eighth graders are exposed to a variety of experiences in English throughout the year. Listed below are just some of the pieces of literature students will have the opportunity to explore:

The Call of the Wild (Jack London)
No Promises in the Wind (Irene Hunt) This is an exciting new unit focusing on The Great Depression, which will integrate both English and Social Studies.
“The Diary of Anne Frank” (adapted play version)

Several short stories which include:

“Flowers for Algernon” (Daniel Keyes)
“Raymond’s Run” (Toni Cade Bambara)
